Anxiety & Stress: Stop Treating Everything Like a Fire Alarm|

Nothing has happened yet, but your mind has already rehearsed the worst-case ending; your chest tightens, your palms sweat, and even replying to a message or sitting through a short meeting sets off the body's alarm.

What Western Medicine Says

Anxiety is essentially a broken alarm system. In the autonomic nervous system, the sympathetic branch runs "fight or flight" while the parasympathetic branch runs "rest and digest" — in anxiety, the sympathetic side stays dominant and the body remains on standby. Meanwhile, the HPA (hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal) axis keeps pumping cortisol, and the brain's amygdala becomes oversensitive to threats, so "a small thing" can trigger a full-body response. Typical physical symptoms include palpitations, chest tightness, shortness of breath, trembling, sweating, frequent urination, and tense neck-and-shoulder muscles — many people see a cardiologist first, only to learn it's anxiety after a clear cardiac workup.

Modern medicine treats anxiety disorders as well-defined conditions: first-line treatment is psychotherapy (such as CBT), with medication (e.g., SSRIs/SNRIs) when needed. These treatments rest on solid evidence. One important note: if you have a diagnosed anxiety disorder, follow your doctor's plan — don't stop medication on your own, and don't expect acupuncture alone to carry you through.

What TCM Sees

TCM links emotions directly to the organs — "the liver governs free flow," keeping qi, blood, and emotions moving smoothly. Chronic stress and overthinking injure the liver first:

  • Liver qi stagnation: flow is blocked — chest tightness, frequent sighing, mood swings, and bloating or belching when nervous. Approach: soothe the liver and move qi.

  • Stagnant liver qi turning into fire: stagnation brews "fire" over time — irritability, flushed face, bitter taste, restlessness and sleeplessness at night. Approach: clear liver fire and calm the mind.

  • Liver overacting on the spleen (or dual deficiency of heart and spleen): prolonged pressure wears down digestion and the heart — poor appetite, loose stools, foggy thinking, palpitations, forgetfulness. Approach: soothe the liver, strengthen the spleen, tonify qi and nourish the heart.

So the same anxiety can be "stuck," "burning," or "empty" — each calls for a different approach, which is why someone else's stress remedy may do nothing for you.

Prolonged anxiety also disturbs the heart spirit — TCM says "the heart houses the spirit"; a disturbed spirit brings difficulty falling asleep, vivid dreams, easy waking, palpitations, and forgetfulness. That's why anxiety and insomnia so often travel together, and why calming the spirit and soothing the liver usually go hand in hand.

Typical Presentations

  • Chest tightness and a racing heart before speaking up or in meetings, eased only after several deep breaths, with frequent sighing — liver qi stagnation

  • Replaying small daytime events over and over, then lying awake restless with dry mouth and bitter taste, snapping easily — stagnant liver qi turning into fire

  • After months of high pressure: no appetite, loose stools, worsening memory, palpitations and fatigue — dual deficiency of heart and spleen (long-standing liver overacting on the spleen)

How Acupuncture Helps

Acupuncture uses pattern-based point selection: points to move liver qi for stagnation patterns, heat-clearing and mind-calming points when fire is present, and spleen-strengthening, qi-tonifying points for deficiency — aiming to shift the autonomic nervous system out of sympathetic overdrive. Some clinical studies suggest acupuncture may ease anxiety-related symptoms, but most have methodological limitations and the evidence quality is limited. Similar symptoms caused by organic disease (e.g., hyperthyroidism) need testing first; for diagnosed anxiety disorders, acupuncture is positioned as an adjunct to standard care. Acupuncture works by regulating autonomic tone and easing muscle tension; it usually takes a course of treatments, and a single session doesn't represent its effect.

5 Things You Can Do Daily

Practice belly breathing: inhale 4 seconds, hold 7, exhale 8, twice a day; get 30 minutes of moderate exercise three times a week; cut back on caffeine and energy drinks after noon; put the phone down an hour before bed and keep a regular schedule; write your worries down and rank them one by one — once written out, anxiety shrinks. Also, exercise during the day and stick to gentle stretching before bed; a 15-minute hot foot soak before sleep is especially kind to a restless mind; 10 minutes of daily mindfulness meditation, kept up for two weeks, leaves many people falling asleep more easily.

Time to See a Doctor If…

Worry and tension last six months or more, already affect your work and relationships, you have panic attacks (sudden palpitations, choking sensation, sense of doom), or depression tags along. Important: if you have thoughts of harming yourself or others, seek professional help or call your local crisis hotline right away — don't tough it out alone. Anxiety is visible, measurable, and treatable; the key is finding your type. Anxiety often amplifies insomnia, digestive trouble, and chronic pain — treating them together works better.
